Why Leaders Who Sleep Lead Better

Most leaders assume that becoming a better leader requires learning another skill, reading another book, or attending another conference.

Those things certainly help. But one of the most overlooked leadership tools is something God designed us to do every night: sleep.

Scripture reminds us that we are finite. Psalm 127:2 says, “He grants sleep to those he loves.” Sleep is a daily reminder that God is the One who sustains the world while we rest. Leadership begins with humility—the recognition that we are not indispensable.

Neuroscience echoes this biblical principle.

During healthy sleep, the brain restores the prefrontal cortex, the part of the brain responsible for sound judgment, emotional regulation, attention, and wise decision-making. A sleep-deprived brain, however, becomes more reactive and impulsive. We interrupt more quickly, misread people’s intentions, make poorer decisions, and struggle to regulate our emotions.

In other words, sleep doesn’t simply make you feel better. It helps you lead better.

Whether you’re leading a church, a business, a classroom, or your family, your greatest leadership asset isn’t endless availability. It’s bringing your healthiest brain to those you serve.

Jesus often withdrew to lonely places to pray. Although Scripture doesn’t tell us how long He slept, it repeatedly shows that He honored rhythms of work, solitude, and rest rather than living in perpetual hurry.

Healthy leaders recognize that rest is not the enemy of productivity. It is one of its foundations.

Three Ways to Lead Better This Week

  • Protect a consistent bedtime as intentionally as you protect important meetings.
  • Before making major decisions, ask whether fatigue—not wisdom—is influencing your thinking.
  • View sleep as stewardship of the people God has entrusted to your care, not simply stewardship of your own health.

Your leadership tomorrow is shaped by how well you sleep tonight.
